Cool websites for learning...

I've added a new page we're I'll be adding links to cool and fun websites that will help us with our learning.  These are games we can use at school and at home to practice our maths and reading.  Check it out!

How time flies...

Wow, it's week 9, which means we only have a little over 2 weeks left of Term 3!  We're looking forward to book week in Week 11 to end the term with a bang.  We have lots of exciting activities planned for book week, including making our own comic books, dressing up as our favorite book characters, writing the story for a wordless picture book and more.

Recently we made some Picasso-inspired artworks for our Calendar art on computers, then with pastels.  Take a look here...

Super successful speeches!

Our focus for writing so far this term has been on writing to persuade or argue - which means to state our opinion on a topic and try to make our audience agree with us.  The result of all our hard work in class and at home has been the writing and presenting of persuasive speeches.  Mr Blake was very pleased by the effort put in by the whole class and it was very hard to decide upon the best ones.

After some consideration two finalists were chosen.  Room 5 was represented by Richard Fallon (Year 2) and Hayley Brown (Year 3) at whole school speech finals.  Richard came first in the Year 2 final and Hayley achieved second place for Year 3.  An outstanding effort from these two that Room 5 can be very proud of.  Well done!

Maths Week!

It's maths week this week.  Take a look at this cool website that's full of games and activities to help us learn: http://www.mathsweek.org.nz/ .  I've created logins and passwords for all of us in Room 5 and will be giving these to you this week.  I encourage all of you to spend some time on here at home this week playing the games and exploring the website.

New pages in our blog.

Hi Room 5, I've uploaded this week's Homefun and have added some new pages to our blog with some practice sheets for basic facts and place value.  I encourage you to practice these in your own time.  So far I have added some stage 4 and 5 problems to practice, I will continue to add to these throughout the term and will also add some stage 6 pages later on.

Welcome back for Term 3

Welcome back students and parents of Room 5.  I hope you've all enjoyed your holidays and are ready for the term ahead.  We have a lot of really exciting learning to do in Room 5 in Term 3.

We will be investigating the Olympic Games and looking at how things have changed from the past to the modern Olympics.

We will be learning about fractions and shapes (geometry) in maths.

We will be writing persuasive speeches and presenting these in week 4.  This means choosing a topic that you feel strongly about and writing a speech that will hopefully make other people agree with your opinion. For example, you might think that you should be allowed to stay up later, or that children should be paid to go to school.  Once you've written your speech you will need to stand in front of an audience and read your speech to them.  This will be a big challenge and some of us might find it a little scary, but I know Room 5 are up to the challenge!

Please feel free to contact me with any questions or concerns.
