Cool websites for learning...

I've added a new page we're I'll be adding links to cool and fun websites that will help us with our learning.  These are games we can use at school and at home to practice our maths and reading.  Check it out!

How time flies...

Wow, it's week 9, which means we only have a little over 2 weeks left of Term 3!  We're looking forward to book week in Week 11 to end the term with a bang.  We have lots of exciting activities planned for book week, including making our own comic books, dressing up as our favorite book characters, writing the story for a wordless picture book and more.

Recently we made some Picasso-inspired artworks for our Calendar art on computers, then with pastels.  Take a look here...

Super successful speeches!

Our focus for writing so far this term has been on writing to persuade or argue - which means to state our opinion on a topic and try to make our audience agree with us.  The result of all our hard work in class and at home has been the writing and presenting of persuasive speeches.  Mr Blake was very pleased by the effort put in by the whole class and it was very hard to decide upon the best ones.

After some consideration two finalists were chosen.  Room 5 was represented by Richard Fallon (Year 2) and Hayley Brown (Year 3) at whole school speech finals.  Richard came first in the Year 2 final and Hayley achieved second place for Year 3.  An outstanding effort from these two that Room 5 can be very proud of.  Well done!

Maths Week!

It's maths week this week.  Take a look at this cool website that's full of games and activities to help us learn: http://www.mathsweek.org.nz/ .  I've created logins and passwords for all of us in Room 5 and will be giving these to you this week.  I encourage all of you to spend some time on here at home this week playing the games and exploring the website.

New pages in our blog.

Hi Room 5, I've uploaded this week's Homefun and have added some new pages to our blog with some practice sheets for basic facts and place value.  I encourage you to practice these in your own time.  So far I have added some stage 4 and 5 problems to practice, I will continue to add to these throughout the term and will also add some stage 6 pages later on.

Welcome back for Term 3

Welcome back students and parents of Room 5.  I hope you've all enjoyed your holidays and are ready for the term ahead.  We have a lot of really exciting learning to do in Room 5 in Term 3.

We will be investigating the Olympic Games and looking at how things have changed from the past to the modern Olympics.

We will be learning about fractions and shapes (geometry) in maths.

We will be writing persuasive speeches and presenting these in week 4.  This means choosing a topic that you feel strongly about and writing a speech that will hopefully make other people agree with your opinion. For example, you might think that you should be allowed to stay up later, or that children should be paid to go to school.  Once you've written your speech you will need to stand in front of an audience and read your speech to them.  This will be a big challenge and some of us might find it a little scary, but I know Room 5 are up to the challenge!

Please feel free to contact me with any questions or concerns.

ANZAC DAY

We read Simpson and the donkey and learned about how Kiwi's helped those in World War One by making ANZAC biscuits to send overseas.

We made biscuits and pretended we were sending them to Jack Simpson and we wrote letters to him explaining what we had done, including FEELING words to make our letters interesting.

We then did some ICT magic - putting ourselves into a field of poppies.  Here are some examples - for more, visit the office at Reremoana School.

Dear Jack
When I smelled the ANZAC cookies, I really wanted to eat them.  They smelled like chocolate.
It’s sad that I can’t see you.  But you are helping our country.  It makes me feel happy because you are helping my people.

When I made the ANZAC cookies I put love in too.
Hope you enjoy it.

Love Hayley

Dear Jack
Today we have made ANZAC biscuits.  When Room 5 made them some of the class wanted to lick their hands.  I hope you're okay in the war saving people.

It was pretty fun making them.  I hope they taste good.

Maybe I can send a cookie to you.  Was the cookie good?
What did it taste like.

Baseball Skills

We have been learning to hit a ball with a baseball bat. We know how to:
  • hold the bat
  • swing the bat
  • squash the bug

We also run the correct way around the bases now, catch the ball like a crab when it rolls on the ground, and pass to each other.

Travel Wise Week

How to get to school and home safely.
Firstly stop look and listen before you cross the road.
Secondly, say where you are so your Mum can cross the road and she can take you back to the car.
This is how you stay safe.

Here are some examples.

The Bee Dance

We have been connecting to books that we read.  To show our understanding of the Big Book Bertha and the Beeman we created our own bee dance.

We planned it, illustrated at least three dance steps, wrote the steps out and narrated the dance all on kidpix.

Here is Rittivong's Bee Dance:

What SoUnD do all the words have in common?

Check the homefun page for the video of Miss Tait saying a list of words that all have the same sound somewhere in them.  Comment on the sound and the letters that make that sound.

Groups of ten to 100

We know that if we have groups of ten they make a big number.  Every time we have ten ones, we bundle them up and make one ten.

Here we are making groups of ten and finding out what the number is for those groups.

Recounting our holidays

We wanted to get pen to paper!  This was all about getting our ideas down.

Using 'doing', 'hearing', 'feeling' and 'seeing' we recounted one or two special events that we took part in during the holiday.  Come in and read about our experiences.

I was riding my bikeI was speeding
My chains were going click, click, click
My wheels were going bsesesss.
I was tired because when my legs go around I get tired
I was seeing the grass waving.

By Hayley
I was playing racing car games
and I went through first to last stage
I was hearing the racing thing
I was excited because I went up a stage
I saw flash cars and motor bikes.
By Tyson

Playing with my boogie board on the beach
I was playing with the sand
I heard the waves splashing
I heard the stick making a funny noise when I pulled it
So when I went in the water I felt so giggly
I saw the big waves
I saw the bushes shaking from the wind.
By Richard

I went fishing and I went rock climbing
Hearing the fish splashing in the water and hearing the rocks when I climbed
Feeling that the fish was going to come out of the bucket and feeling scared
Seeing the fish moving and seeing that I went so high.

The Fun of Maths

We have already learned how to play three new maths games: Salute, Addition Snap and Star Jump Addition.  Have you got cards at home?  We'd love to teach you how to play.

Split a deck into two piles (of numbered cards).
Two people flip them at the same time then add the two
numbers. The first to call the answer (if all agree it's correct
gets both cards - the player with the most cards wins).
Split cards into two piles, two players walk around their set
while a third person calls STOP, they flip the card they are closest to, bring
it into the middle and the first to add it wins, the other swaps
with the caller.

Getting to know one another

It didn't take long for us to get to know one another.  During the signature hunt on Wednesday we found out that we have much in common including reading great books, watching hilarious movies and swimming during the holidays.
